Deal details

An innovative Australian company has developed proprietary robotic platforms and consumables used for the cloning of plants and plantlets. The company produces a full range of consumables, for example boxes, pods, membrane lids, and pod-stands that are a source of recurring revenue.

Cloning provides disease-free plants rapidly. It usually takes up to a decade to supply new true-to-type varieties. Although cloning has been used since ancient times through methods such as cutting and tuber propagation, these approaches are generally labour intensive, slow and limited in species success.

The Company is the first to introduce automation to plant cloning, just as most other industries have been automated. Automation provides reproducibility, reliability, speed, increased hygiene and cost reduction.

The benefits of using the company’s platform are:
• Labour costs are reduced by between 5 and 20 times compared to current methods that are highly labour intensive
• Reduced unit costs (to less than $0.10c per plantlet)
• Plants are more vigorous and better quality
• Robotics and pod-system meet hygiene standards and contamination is reduced
• Increased success with difficult species
• Provide data for improved management
• Lab space is reduced
• Plants grow much faster using the company’s unique robotics and pod systems
• A greater percentage of plants are successful (reduced attrition)
• Low value plants become commercially viable to clone

The Company is early stage, having completed its R&D. It makes its money through
• the sale of robotic platforms;
• ongoing sale of consumables, and
• licensing fees or royalties for exclusive rights.

Early trials and relationships have been established with multinational businesses such as

• Arbogen
• Syngenta
• Nestle
• DuPont and
• Duarte.
